Newborn abductions are rare but serious security incidents can occur. RFID infant protection technology gives hospitals an electronic layer of protection around newborns by monitoring small transmitters worn by infants and alerting staff when one approaches an area it shouldn’t.
What Is an RFID Infant Protection Technology?
An RFID (radio frequency identification) infant protection technology uses radio signals to monitor small transmitters worn by infants.
Receivers and monitored points placed around the hospital detect those signals, and software determines when an alarm is needed. The goal is to help prevent infant abduction, loss, and unauthorized removal.
How the Technology Helps
Infant Transmitters
Each infant wears a small, battery-powered RFID transmitter that carries a unique ID. At regular intervals, the transmitter sends out a short radio signal containing that ID, so receivers in the hospital can identify which infant’s tag they’re hearing.
Transmitters are typically worn on the ankle. RFT also offers an umbilical cord clamp transmitter through its Safe Place® system.
Tamper and Band Detection
The transmitter keeps track of the condition of its band. If the band is cut or loosened, the transmitter changes what it broadcasts, adding a tamper status to its regular signal. Receivers pick up that status and pass it to the software, which raises an alert.
Monitored Exits and Zones
Receivers placed at exits, stairwells, and other restricted areas listen for tag signals in their coverage range. When a receiver picks up a protected infant’s tag, the software checks the tag’s ID against the rules set for that location. If the infant isn’t authorized to be there, the software triggers an alarm.
Automatic Door Locking
Receivers at monitored exits are connected to the hospital’s door locks. When the software decides a protected tag is too close to an exit, it sends a command through the receiver to lock the door.
Instant Staff Alerts
Every signal a receiver picks up carries the tag’s ID, and each receiver is tied to a known location.
The software combines the two, so an alert can show which infant’s tag triggered it and where. It then sends that information to the staff console and, in some systems, to mobile devices.
Preventing Mother-Baby Mismatches
Systems that support mismatch protection link the baby’s tag ID and the mother’s tag ID in the software when they are paired. Later, a reader picks up both IDs and the software checks whether they match.
If they don’t, the system alerts staff. RFT offers this through its optional Baby Check® feature.
